Well they were definitely playing it up in commercials. Although that was more NFC than WiFi Direct.

    Re: Android beam.

Just as a quick update, the aforementioned File Expert just added WiFi Direct sharing in their latest version. I haven't tested it yet though.

I tried using Android Beam to transfer a picture today on 2 ELTE's (one rooted, one not). All I got was a vibration and a musical chime, but no prompt to transfer, and no picture on the new phone. Both phones have NFC and Android Beam turned on in settings. Any ideas?

As mentioned earlier, you need a third-party app that will support transfer over NFC. Check out post #2.

    Re: Android beam.

I am amazed no one has brought this up till now. I've been trying to make it work for a couple of months. This is one thing I thought would be awesome to have. I can confirm that it will not work without a 3rd party app with pictures and large files. You can transfer contacts between the GS3 and EVO with no problems. I will try to do contacts between 2 EVO's tonight and see what happens. I also have office on both EVO's so I will try pictures and large files and web pages later tonight and see what happens.
