Ok, a couple things first...
1. I am totally relaxed and I am not attacking you nor am I offended as I mentioned at the very first of my original post
2. I as well do not wish to hijack the thread so this will be my last comment
Now for my last response...
I don't take life too seriously and agree that if this world lightened up a bit it would be a better place. I am also not a fan of political correctness which is why you have not offended me nor have I lashed out to attack you in order to convey my opinions. I don't think you meant anything intentionally by your screen name or that you would ever use that word derogatively toward another person (I totally understood the context in which you used it). I think pretty much everybody on this board (maybe not xbox live though lol) is a more descent human being than to use that word in that manner directly at a person with special needs. That has not been my point at all I promise!!!
Here is what I do know though... that word used in any context plain and simple perpetuates the use of the word, and in doing so, the reality of the world we live in is that means it will in turn get used in other contexts. Children hear it and then use it. They don't have the maturity or the consideration to fully understand the ramifications of it's use. To them it is just funny and all a joke. As I said, I was guilty of using it when I was younger and did not know any better nor did I have the consideration to take in to account the feelings of others. So... what is at one instance used in the context of jest ends up later being a young immature child using it in different context on my nephew or any other child with special needs on a playground somewhere in the future. This is the reality of the unintended consequences of it's use at all by adults. It is our job to guide and teach children by our example... they will absolutely follow whatever example we set I assure you.
Picture yourself as a father, your child has Down Syndrome and a kid at school on the playground uses the word toward your son in order to be funny and be the cool kid. We have all been kids and know how kids are. Now you wouldn't be so offended I'm sure... that would no longer be your concern. Your concern would be the feelings of your child and how it made them feel. I can tell you that the thought of that happening to my nephew hurts deep into my soul and he is only my nephew. It is impossible for me to even imagine the pain my sister would feel on behalf of her son and her complete helplessness to take that pain away from my nephew. This is the perspective and awareness that I was trying to covey in my first post. I am all about taking life easy, joking around and having a good time so long as it is not at the expense (whether intended or inadvertently unintended) of others. With my new found perspective on this particular word and how it can affect others it would be just as easy to say YouJuckinFackA$$ as opposed to You...well you know the rest. It conveys the exact same thing, is light hearted and IMO actually is funny without the unintended consequences.
Again, I appreciate the dialogue and you taking the time to read and consider my thoughts and opinions. I don't have to have you agree with me as you have the right to your opinions as well. I would gladly discuss it further with you (heck I'd pm you my phone number if you want it) in an adult, respectful and considerate manner if you would like. (just not here in this thread any further)
Take care,
Vance
